Dual Language Library

17th December 2020

In Ballinteer Educate Together N.S. we speak languages from all over the world. This month some of our multilingual students helped us to choose new books for our library in 18 different languages! Over 60 new dual-language books arrived this week.

Third Class were excited to read and share some of our new dual-language books. These girls shared their reading in Arabic as well as English.

Brighter Lights Dundrum

This year our school took part in Imagine Dundrum’s Community Art Project. Lots of local schools took part creating artwork for the season. You can visit our school’s banner on the plaza outside Dundrum library. Thank you to Tom and all the organisers for inviting us to get involved.

Back to school!

Our classrooms and corridors came alive again this September.

6th Class were learning about the Feast of Mabon during this time of the Autumn Equinox. That lead us on to explore the pagan ‘Wheel of the Year’ and all the festivals associated with it.
It happens to us all at some time or another, but it just so happened that we all had a ‘Bad Hair Day’ on the same day in 6th Class!
1st Class played Guess Who!
And welcomed Autumn’s beauty.
In 6th Class we were learning about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We all chose a different Article and illustrated it. It was quite a poignant and powerful topic – it created great conversation and debate.
2nd Class learned about the Irish legend, Oisín in Tír na nÓg.

Junior Infants have been learning about our favourite fairy tales.
Senior Infants have been dreaming of summer days!
In 6th Class we were using the Pointillist technique to create optical mixing in our Autumn scenes.
Maths Problem of the Month returned! See can you solve this Sealed Solutions problem at home.
6th Class started off the year with a bit of Zentangle work being conscious of positive and negative space while using line and form. We then had an explosion of citrus fruit to brighten up the classroom.
4th Class learned about the legend of The Children of Lir.

On Wednesday, 24th June we were so proud to be congratulating our first graduating class of Ballinteer Educate Together. The students of Orlaith’s Sixth Class, along with their families and teachers, celebrated a virtual graduation filled with memories. Many of these students have been with us since the school’s opening in 2012 and so it was an emotional night for everyone. We will miss them all but know that they are more than ready to meet the challenges ahead in secondary school. We know that there are great things ahead of this history-making class!

June Maths Challenge: Make a Sundial

Before clocks, watches and phones, we used a sundial to tell the time. What is a sundial? It’s an ancient instrument that uses shadows cast by the sun to show the time. And today, a sun sundial makes a great feature or structure in your garden. The best bit is, it’s fun and easy to create your own, personalised sundial!

Here’s what you need and how to make it:

  • Find a thick, sturdy stick
  • 12 rocks, pebbles or stones
  • Some paint or a marker pen
  • A watch or clock (just to get you set up, then you can use nature’s clock)
  1. Start by numbering the rocks 1 to 12, you can paint numbers on them, or paint each one a different colour.
  2. Find a sunny spot that you can return to throughout the day. If you have a garden, this is perfect.
  3. Place the stick in the ground so that it stands upright.
  4. Using your existing watch, check where the stick’s shadow is every hour and mark this using your rocks.
  5. As every hour passes, place a rock in the spot that matches the time so that it’s in the stick’s shadow. After 12 hours, you should be left with a circle of rocks around your stick.

And that’s all there is to it.

Thursday, 28th May: Willy Wonka’s Factory – Invent a Sweet! Congratulations to Kitty Thornton from Second Class. Kitty invented a fantastic kitten-making lollipop! We think this would be a very popular new sweet in Willy Wonka’s Factory. Remember that today, Friday is the last in our daily art challenges. Thank you to all those who have taken part since the beginning.

Wednesday, 27th May: Princes and Princesses. Congratulations to Sophie O’Driscoll from 4th Class for her fantastic and very original peg doll prince and princess! We loved that Sophie chose a new medium to explore today’s theme. Well done!

We are very proud of 5th Class student Noah Cooper. He entered the RTÉjr We Love Books short story writing competition, and it was just announced today that his story was highly commended, and he placed in the top five! 
Noah will be doing a phone interview next week which will be on the Homeschool Hub. When the RTÉ television studio reopens Noah will also be invited in to record his story.

School might be closed for two weeks but that hasn’t stopped our wonderful students from learning! We love to hear about the activities and projects you are getting up to at home. Quiz Time! Some of our students and parents got together to organise a Zoom quiz before the Spring Break. Everyone really enjoyed seeing their friends again.
Some holiday fun times for these sisters! Thank you for sharing your adorable sock rabbits!
This sixth class student and her brother had a Skype history lesson with their aunt in Crete. They learned all about how in the 17th Century, inhabitants of a small village in England overcame the bubonic plague by self isolating. We can learn from this historic account and know that it will all be okay in the end!

Look who decided to make an early appearance! Laura’s Senior Infants class had been caring for these eggs. The eggs have gone on holidays with Laura during this school closure. Stay tuned for more updates.

These sisters decided that they wanted to start school today. They did some St Patrick themed exercises as well as general Maths and English. Our capable fourth class student was giving her younger sister from Junior Infants a lesson in Irish. It was their mum’s first Irish lesson too! The girls decorated the entrance to their building hoping to bring some cheer to their neighbours.

Hopscotch spelling: A made up game.
Draw up the alphabet in chalk on the pavement. Child throws a pebble. Someone calls out a word for whatever letter the pebble lands on. The child has to hop to the letters that spell out the word.

While out and about these Ballinteer brothers are picking things they will look up & learn about over the coming week- Waterfalls, Mountains, Frogs & frogspawn, Weather etc. They are keeping social distance by going to remote places. Fairy Castle, Dublin Mountains & Powerscourt Waterfall.
